Tottenham have always been in the media spotlight for one reason or another in recent months. For most parts of the season, the Lilywhites have garnered all the attention for the wrong reasons, and that has shown in the club’s decision-making process regarding the managerial situation at N17. The North London club did not do favours on itself after waiting for so long to relieve Ange Postecoglou from his duties.
The Lilywhites have become an epitome of failure in the past two decades. Numerous managers have come and tried their luck to turn the club’s fortunes around, but none have managed to go all the way. Many fans believe this is due to Daniel Levy’s intentions of commercialising the club and disregard the problems on the pitch.
While that may be true, no sane manager would want to leave a stable environment and test themselves at N17 under Daniel Levy’s watch. And why is that? The answer is simple. Ange Postecoglou dared to end the club’s 17-year wait for a major trophy, and finally succeeding in doing that by winning the Europa League. Yet, the Australian tactician was sacked by Levy just two weeks after the historic achievement.
Now, Tottenham have hired Thomas Frank as their new manager for next season as they look to kickstart a new era at N17. The Danish tactician will be under pressure from the get-go and every negative result will be heavily criticised by the media and the fans. The ex-Brentford boss has not even managed a game for the Lilywhites, but Daniel Levy’s bold statement of aiming to win the Premier League and the Champions League might have put Frank in unnecessary pressure already.
Now, iconic commentator Ian Darke believes Thomas Frank has a massive task at Tottenham following his switch from Brentford. Speaking to Tottenham News, Darke said,
“Probably Thomas Frank, I would say, although he has built up so much credit in the bank for the job he has done at Brentford. Even if it didn’t work out for him at Tottenham, it is likely people would shrug their shoulders and say ‘well, you know, Tottenham can be a bit of a basket case club, with all the politics, it is a difficult place to be a manager. He would be slightly damaged goods if it didn’t work out for him.”
The iconic commentator added,
“Is it a risk for Levy? Well, if it is, it is one he is very anxious to take as he has sacked a manager who just won him a trophy. He is never going to be Mr Popular with the supporters, a lot of them have made it pretty clear that they want him out, that is what Frank has got to deal with, he has got to become the master of the mad house a little bit.”
Ian Darke has suggested that Thomas Frank has done a brilliant job at Brentford and not many people would question his calibre if things end up going south at Tottenham next season. The iconic commentator insists that Spurs can be a tough place to manage as Daniel Levy is not easy to work with. Darke also adds that Levy does not get along with the fans, and Thomas Frank will have to balance his relationship with the club chairman and the Spurs faithful if he wants to be successful at N17.
It is worth noting that the average tenure of a Tottenham manager is under a year and a half in recent seasons. This just shows that Thomas Frank is putting a lot of pressure on himself, and it is only a matter of time before Daniel Levy starts to tun on the Danish tactician if things go south next season. Filling in the boots of the manager that won Spurs their first major trophy in 17 years will not be an easy task as well for the ex-Brentford boss.
