Danny Welbeck to Manchester United links clarified

Danny Welbeck was linked with a return to Manchester United in the last few weeks as rumours about where he would go next circled.

The striker, 35, scored 13 goals in the Premier League last season in 37 appearances for Brighton and Hove Albion whilst also providing one assist.

Throughout his time with Brighton, Welbeck has remained a source of output with more than five goals coming in each of his campaigns with the side.

In his time at Manchester United, on the other hand, the forward had standout seasons, scoring ten goals in the 2013/14 campaign whilst scoring 12 goals in the 2011/12 season. He also had disappointing seasons, however.

Last month, Rio Ferdinand urged Welbeck to return to Manchester United instead of joining Premier League rivals Chelsea. The forward chose Chelsea eventually, though, agreeing to join the Blues ahead of the new season.

Manchester Evening News have now clarified the links that existed between Danny Welbeck and Manchester United throughout the deal.

Reporting on the situation, journalist Tyrone Marshall has revealed that there was no approach from Old Trafford to try and sign the 35-year-old.

Marshall has also stated that United did look at a deal in 2024, under Erik Ten Hag, and came close to signing the forward in 2025, under Ruben Amorim, but it was never completed.

With a move to Chelsea now inevitable, United may be left to look back at what could have been. Instead of Danny Welbeck playing for the club, it is likely that he will face United once again.

Manchester United play Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on 31st October with the reverse fixture at Old Trafford taking place on 6th February.*

Welbeck did score against United last season at Old Trafford as the Red Devils picked up three points with a 4-2 win. He may look to score again in the coming campaign.
