David Beckham and Ronaldo have officially been named in India’s squad ahead of a major international tournament, raising plenty of eyebrows among football fans.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s international future has been a huge talking point since the 2026 World Cup.
The former Manchester United star recently confirmed he intends to continue representing Portugal despite speculation surrounding his retirement.
Meanwhile, Sir David Beckham has remained one of football’s biggest names despite retiring more than a decade ago.
The United legend recently made headlines after reportedly earning around £19 million through commercial work during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
With both names now appearing in India’s latest squad announcement, many supporters initially assumed an extraordinary international switch had taken place.
The reality, however, is rather different.
The Sports Authority of India officially unveiled India’s track cycling squad for the 2026 Commonwealth Games through its Instagram account.
Among the selected athletes are David Beckham Elkatohchoongo and Ronaldo Singh Laitonjam.
They are two cyclists whose names immediately caught the attention of football supporters around the world.
David Beckham Elkatohchoongo will represent India in the men’s Keirin after previously competing at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
Ronaldo Singh Laitonjam has been selected for the men’s 1,000m time trial.
Despite sharing names with two of football’s biggest icons, neither athlete has any connection to the former Manchester United stars.
According to previous interviews, Beckham was named after the England legend because his uncle was a huge admirer of the former United midfielder.
Meanwhile, Ronaldo’s name was inspired by Ronaldinho after his father celebrated Brazil’s famous 2002 World Cup victory over England.
The Sports Authority of India’s Instagram post wished the entire squad the very best ahead of Glasgow 2026.
The cyclists were described as a team powered by “speed, precision and determination” as they prepare to compete for the Tricolour.
While football fans may have briefly believed Beckham and Ronaldo were preparing for an international football tournament together, it is India’s Commonwealth Games cycling team that will now carry those famous names onto one of sport’s biggest stages.
