Manchester United’s global legacy continues to resonate, with former stars leaving an indelible mark both on and off the pitch.

The club’s academy has produced some of football’s most recognisable faces, and the influence of past players extends far beyond Old Trafford.

Manchester United legends are regularly celebrated for their achievements, inspiring new generations of players and fans alike.

The club’s history of nurturing talent and producing world-class athletes emphasises the broader impact of football in British society.

Among these icons, one figure has consistently stood out for his achievements, leadership and philanthropic work.

That figure is Sir David Beckham, who has now been formally knighted in recognition of his services to football and British society.

The 50-year-old, named on King Charles’ Birthday Honours list earlier this year, received the accolade during a ceremony in Berkshire on Tuesday.

Beckham’s footballing career began at Manchester United’s academy in 1992, progressing to the first team where he spent 11 years before moving to Real Madrid in a £25 million deal in 2003.

During his playing career, he also featured for LA Galaxy, AC Milan on loan, and finished at Paris Saint-Germain in 2013.

Internationally, David Beckham earned 115 caps for England, captaining the Three Lions from 2000 to 2006 and appearing in three World Cups and two European Championships.

Beyond football, Beckham’s contributions have spanned humanitarian and civic efforts.

Born in east London, he played a pivotal role in securing the 2012 Olympic Games for London and has partnered with UNICEF since 2005, with a dedicated fund established in his name in 2015 to mark a decade-long collaboration.

In 2024, Beckham became an ambassador for the King’s Foundation, supporting educational programmes and initiatives promoting environmental awareness among young people.

He has also invested in the game through club ownership, co-owning Salford City with former United teammate Gary Neville and Inter Miami in Major League Soccer, further cementing his influence on football globally.

Sir David Beckham’s knighthood recognises not only his extraordinary sporting achievements but also his enduring contributions to British society, education, humanitarian causes and the global growth of football.
