David De Gea sparks outrage among Fiorentina fans

The pressure around Fiorentina is building at exactly the point in the season where every mistake starts to feel heavier.

For a club sat too close to the bottom of Serie A, there is very little room for comfort, and even less room for big-name players to drift through difficult spells without scrutiny.

That is what makes David de Gea’s situation such a notable one right now.

The former Manchester United goalkeeper arrived in Florence with the kind of profile few clubs in Fiorentina’s position can usually call upon, bringing years of elite-level experience, European finals and more than 500 appearances in red with him.

But reputations only buy time, not immunity.

When a team is fighting for stability and results are under the microscope every week, even established names can quickly become part of the wider frustration.

According to TuttoMercatoWeb, citing Corriere dello Sport, David De Gea is now facing growing criticism from sections of the Fiorentina support after a difficult period in goal.

The report explains that the 35-year-old has struggled to fully settle into the rhythm of a season shaped more by survival pressure than top-end ambition, and that some of his recent errors, particularly on high balls, have fuelled the debate around his level.

It also points to comments De Gea made after Fiorentina’s defeat to Udinese, where he admitted he may have been able to do more for the opening goal and suggested he perhaps could have come out for the cross.

Speaking about the situation, the Fiorentina captain commented: “Perhaps I could have done better on the first goal. Maybe I could have come out for the cross, but we probably would have conceded later.”

Those words do not appear to have gone down well in Florence, with the discussion around his performances now reopening at a delicate point in the campaign.

Doubts around De Gea have continued after a positive Conference League display from Christensten against Rakow.

However, Stefano Pioli is still expected to turn back to De Gea for the clash with Cremonese at the Stadio Giovanni Zini, where he is also set to captain the side.

That makes the next game a significant one. The Cremonese fixture could prove important not only for Fiorentina’s season, but for De Gea’s own short-term future as well.

While his contract runs until 2028, the outlet says both his wage level and his recent performances are factors pushing the club hierarchy to think carefully.

For Manchester United supporters, it is a striking update given how De Gea’s post-Old Trafford chapter had started to feel like a solid rebuild.

Now, though, the picture looks less settled. Fiorentina need point and David De Gea needs to let his performances do the talking.
