David Moyes has offered a definitive statement regarding Jack Grealish.
It was a frustrating day for Everton at Sunderland despite what had been an encouraging opening spell.
After Iliman Ndiaye put his side in front, Moyes probably thought they were on track to get back to winning ways.
That hope did not last, though, and Thierno Barry’s missed chance from close range only added to their regrets.
However, the team did not dwell on that result, beating Fulham at the Hill Dickinson Stadium on Saturday.
And writing in his programme notes ahead of the match, Moyes made a point of praising Grealish’s impact since joining on loan.
Grealish has been left out of Thomas Tuchel’s latest England squad, which could signal the end of his World Cup hopes. Even so, it should not affect his performances for Everton over the next few months.
Moyes has backed the Manchester City loanee after a physical night at Sunderland, speaking out in Saturday’s match programme.
“After a good start it was a difficult night. The crowd at the Stadium of Light did everything they could to give their team every possible advantage, and Jack Grealish also had to deal with several rough challenges.
“I’d like to make the point that Jack is not trying to win free-kicks. Stats show he has been fouled more than any other player in the Premier League so far this season,” he stated.
Despite Grealish’s recent England disappointment, the Toffees have made their interest in a permanent signing clear to him, according to a report from Everton News.
The move seems to be working well for everyone involved. The 30-year-old has consistently provided a strong attacking threat down the left wing.
StatMuse data shows Grealish has been fouled 19 times over his last five games, underlining his status as a real threat to rival defences.
| Opponent | Number of times fouled |
| Liverpool | 6 |
| West Ham | 5 |
| Crystal Palace | 4 |
| Tottenham Hotspur | 2 |
| Sunderland | 2 |
Keeping him fit will be crucial for Moyes, especially with Ndiaye set to head off soon for international duty, as the Africa Cup of Nations takes place between December and January.
Grealish’s joy is shining through at Everton, and fans have taken note right from the start.
Against Fulham, he had another good display, strengthening his case to remain at the club after his loan spell ends.
