Everton under David Moyes have been a revelation. A run of seven games undefeated has them out of the relegation battle. Small tweaks and new beliefs from the players have made a drastic difference on the pitch.
While personnel changes have been from necessity, they have been impactful. Jake O’Brien and Beto have shown their worth after finding game time hard to come by under Sean Dyche.
O’Brien has played in a hybrid role on the right of defence. While lining up in the right-back position he often shifts centrally, with Jesper Lindstrom dropping down from right midfield into a wing-back role.
Beto has found his form under Moyes. Now tied as the club’s top goal scorer despite starting just six league matches. He scored five in his first four league starts under the new manager. The move to the Guinea-Bissau striker starting was forced by an injury to Dominic Calvert-Lewin but has proven to be the Scottish manager’s best one yet.
The biggest change under Moyes has been the intensity shown on the pitch. It is a stark change from earlier in the season when the team often sat back and relied purely on counterattacks or set pieces for goals.
The Toffees forward press was key to their form last season, where they would have finished 12th if not for multiple points deductions. But that intent diminished in the 24/25 season. But a renewed energy has been found under Moyes, since his arrival they rank top for high-end turnovers that lead to a shot with 10.
They also rank first in tackles, sprints and distance travelled since Moyes’ return. A testament to the belief given to the team by the new manager. A High press and high-effort system have proven fruitful for a team that previously struggled to create chances.
Since Moyes’ appointment, Everton have scored 15 goals in eight league matches, as opposed to the 15 in the first 20 games of the season. The drastic change has been crucial to the club’s rise up the table.
