Ange Postecoglou’s future remains up in the air despite guiding Tottenham to Europa League glory in Bilbao

Tottenham Hotspur beat Premier League rivals Manchester United 1-0 in the UEFA Europa League final on Wednesday. Brennan Johnson’s goal in the 42nd minute of the match at San Mames in Bilbao proved to be the difference between the two sides.

The triumph in Spain ended the North London club’s 17-year wait for a trophy, as Ange Postecoglou delivered major silverware to Spurs in his second season in charge – just as he said he would back in September. Despite backing up his words by winning the European trophy, questions remain about the future of Ange Postecoglou.

The Greek-Australian tactician has risen above all the scathing criticism and intense scrutiny directed towards him since the turn of the year by leading Tottenham to continental glory. However, with the Lilywhites having endured a shocker of a domestic campaign that currently sees them languish 17th in the Premier League table, chairman Daniel Levy is on the hunt for potential managers that could replace Ange Postecoglou at the end of the season.

It was reported earlier this month that Daniel Levy would sack the 59-year-old once the season ended, irrespective of the outcome in the Europa League final. While he must be celebrating Spurs’ iconic triumph in Bilbao, he has a massive decision on his hands about whether to stick or sack Big Ange.

Ange is adamant to stay at the club after leading them to a trophy after 2008 and continue his project, with former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand urging the North Londoners to build on Europa League success next season.

Now, The Athletic’s reputed journalist David Ornstein has claimed that the Tottenham hierarchy’s stance does not seem to have changed despite becoming Europa League champions and Ange is expected to be sacked this summer.

“The clear direction of travel, as far as Tottenham’s hierarchy goes has been to make a change this summer and it’ll be fascinating to see if they follow through with that, I think it’s most likely they will from an outside perspective but I think they’ve got a bit more food for thought now,” David Ornstein told Sky Sports News.

“I think if they look at the evidence and that isn’t just results, performances and injuries, then there’s enormous room for improvement and they feel there’s a very good squad there, they’ve invested pretty heavily, it still needs some work on it and they need some good fortune with injuries. But it wouldn’t surprise me if there’s still a change there and it wouldn’t surprise Ange Postecoglou either.”

Regardless of making Spurs Europa League champions, Ange is walking a tightrope at N17. He has proved his critics wrong in the best possible way, and by attaining Europa League success, the ex-Celtic man has brought Champions League nights back to White Hart Lane next season.

From his end, Ange has done everything he could to end a miserable season on a high. This has given the club a springboard to achieve more success in the upcoming seasons. Whether than will be with the Greek-Australian manager at helm or not remains to be seen.

Truly, Levy has a massive decision to make now, and if he decides that Ange is not good enough to lead the project, it would not stun the fans or everyone associate with the club.
