Sunderland and Borussia Dortmund have agreed a deal that will see midfielder Jobe Bellingham leave the Stadium of Light and head to Germany. The highly rated youngster has been the subject of interest from several German clubs ever since the Black Cats won promotion to the Premier League via the playoffs last month.
Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that a €33m fixed fee, €5m add-ons and also a 15% sell-on clause has been agreed between Sunderland and Dortmund. It will be a record sale for the Black Cats who stuck to their valuation after rejecting Dortmund’s initial offer.
Bellingham and Dortmund have been in discussions since it was confirmed that Sunderland would be playing Premier League football next season. A long-term contract was agreed before the young midfielder joined up with the England U21 squad. It was then up to the two clubs to agree on a fee which appears to have been finalised after Dortmund’s initial offer was rejected by the Black Cats.
Sunderland will be disappointed to be losing their midfielder who has impressed since joining from Birmingham City two years ago. The 19-year-old scored five times in 45 appearances last season as the Black Cats finished fourth in the Championship and gained promotion via the playoffs, beating Sheffield United 2-1 in the final at Wembley.
Following the final whistle at Wembley, the midfielder said: “It means everything for everyone here. It’s all the club have been aiming to achieve for eight years. Every single player who’s come here has spoken about getting the club back to the Premier League.
“So many have failed, but I take a lot of pride in saying I was one of the players who helped this great club get back to where it belongs. I always believed. When you’ve got supporters like this, and a group of lads like that, you have to believe.”
Bellingham will now move on to the next chapter in his career, following in the footsteps of his brother Jude who also played for Dortmund before his big move to Real Madrid.
