Delightful news for Man Utd fans as Ligue 1 club set sights on ‘erratic’ Ten Hag signing

There could be good news in store for Manchester United supporters, as Andre Onana has reportedly landed on Monaco’s shortlist.

In the summer of 2023, the then-Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag identified his former Ajax pupil as the perfect profile to replace David De Gea. Therefore, the club splashed £47.5 million to land the custodian following his exceptional campaign at Inter Milan.

However, replacing the experienced Spaniard with Onana swiftly backfired, as the latter has been committing costly blunders since his arrival, and has been labelled an ‘erratic’ goalkeeper.

At this stage, many fans fear that United would struggle to find the 29-year-old a suitable buyer, but a report from France claims that the Reds could find themselves on ally on this front in the shape of Monaco.

Monaco interested in Andre Onana

According to L’Equipe (via ASMFC), the Ligue 1 side is determined to sign a new goalkeeper this summer, as their current options, Radoslaw Madecki and Philipp Köhn, have failed to convince.

The French principality club has set its sights on several profiles, beginning with 25-year-old Djordje Petrović who spent the season on loan at Strasbourg and will return to Chelsea in the summer, but doesn’t have a future at Stamford Bridge.

The shortlist also includes Onana, as well as De Gea, who is coming off a solid campaign at Fiorentina following a one-year hiatus. Marc Ter Stegen could also be an option after losing his starting role at Barcelona.

How much would Onana cost

It should be noted that Onana’s contract with Man United is valid until June 2028, so INEOS cannot afford to sell him on the cheap, as they would record a capital loss.

The Reds will probably require an offer in the region of £30 million to break even, or perhaps a creative formula (involving an initial loan) to defer the payment for next year.

In the meantime, United are being heavily linked with a move for Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, and have reportedly made contact with their EPL counterparts to enquire about the terms.
