Denmark manager confirms Manchester United star withdraws from squad

Patrick Dorgu’s season at Manchester United has been a frustrating one, with the Dane spending far too much of it out of his natural role.

Michael Carrick deployed him at left-back for the derby defeat to Manchester City in Luke Shaw’s absence, and a mistimed header from Dorgu contributed to Erling Haaland’s winner.

He has managed just one assist in limited minutes so far, a modest return compared with last season’s 3 goals and 3 assists from a more advanced role.

Denmark’s coaching staff have used him very differently, and Danish outlets awarded him top marks for his display on the wing against Norway earlier in the break.

That made what happened on Sunday all the more painful for a player who had finally rediscovered some rhythm.

Denmark manager Brian Riemer has confirmed Patrick Dorgu will play no further part in the international window after limping out of the 2-0 Nations League win over Wales.

Riemer started the 21-year-old on the left wing, but he went down off the ball after half an hour and was replaced by Reims winger Mohamed Daramy.

He walked straight down the tunnel holding the back of his left thigh, with the extent of the damage to be clarified after further tests.

“He’s suffered an injury and has to go home. We’ll have to call up a replacement,” Riemer said, via Tipsbladet.

Denmark now face Portugal on Thursday and Wales on 4 October without him.

Dorgu’s setback is the fifth injury to hit United during the break, and it could hardly have come at a worse moment for Carrick.

Bruno Fernandes was substituted in Portugal’s win over Wales while managing what Jorge Jesus called a “complicated” pre-existing problem, and he missed the following game against Norway.

Marcus Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo both pulled out of England’s squad after the draw at Fulham, while Benjamin Sesko is recovering from a fresh flare-up of his shin problem.

Amad Diallo is yet to feature this season because of an ankle injury, and Matthijs de Ligt is still working his way back from back surgery.

Manuel Ugarte is not expected back until spring, while Tom Heaton and Karl Darlow are also on the treatment table.

United sit 12th with just five points from their opening five league games, and Tottenham visit Old Trafford on 10 October.

Dorgu’s own return date remains unknown, but a hamstring problem could rule him out of that fixture, leaving Carrick short of options on the left once again.
