The best news of the ongoing UEFA European Championship will have nothing to do with a match result.
On Friday, the Danish Football Association confirmed midfielder Christian Eriksen has been released from the hospital following a successful operation after he suffered cardiac arrest during last Saturday's game versus Finland.
The 29-year-old was resuscitated on the pitch, and Denmark team doctor Morten Boesen confirmed Thursday Eriksen would have a defibrillator implanted while hospitalized.
Per ESPN, the Danish FA said in a statement released Friday afternoon:
"Christian Eriksen has been through a successful operation and was today discharged from Rigshospitalet. Today he also visited the national team in Helsingor -- and from there he will go home and spend time with his family"
The statement also included a message from Eriksen:
"Thank you for the massive number of greetings -- it has been incredible to see and feel. The operation went well, and I am doing well under the circumstances. It was really great to see the guys again after the fantastic game they played last night. No need to say, that I will be cheering them on Monday against Russia."
Ahead of Thursday's match between Denmark and Belgium, supporters from both nations honored Eriksen with songs and chants as a massive jersey sporting his name was carried onto the pitch. Play was then stopped at the 10-minute mark so personnel from both teams, the match official, and fans inside Copenhagen's Parken Stadium could offer a round of applause for the star playmaker.
Eriksen typically wears Denmark's No. 10 shirt.
