Did Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi set the record for most-liked photo?

They may play for different sides when they take the pitch at this year's FIFA World Cup, but Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi joined forces for the camera lens in a photo that just about broke the internet over the weekend.

The two soccer superstars posted to their individual Instagram accounts a shot of them playing chest on top of a Louis Vuitton suitcase as part of an advertisement for the luxury brand. Shot by renowned photographer Annie Lebovitz, the image of two of the best players in the world was such an instant hit it set records.

Ronaldo's individual post hit 32.8 million likes in 24 hours, making it the second-most-liked photo in the Instagram era. The most-liked photo ever, of course, is a shot of an egg that was posted with the sole purpose of getting more likes than Kylie Jenner's photo in 2019 with her newborn baby girl, which hit 18 million.

Messi's individual post of the chess advert hit 25.6 likes. So while the lone egg still technically holds the world record at 55.8 million likes, the combined likes from both Ronaldo and Messi would put the Louis Vuitton ad at the top of the list with 58.4 likes.

Messi and Ronaldo will be competing in different groups to kick off the 2022 World Cup, with Argentina being the favorite to advance out of Group C and Portugal being the favorite in Group H. Messi and the Argentinians were second favorites in World Cup betting odds heading into the tournament.
