Ruben Amorim is heading into his first full season as Manchester United manager, with the club in need of a turnaround after a difficult year.
Diogo Dalot is expected to play a key role again, now wearing his preferred squad number after Victor Lindelof’s departure, and stepping up as a voice in the dressing room.
Last season was rough for everyone involved. Dalot included, as he struggled with form and fitness like many others in the squad.
But he has said that two players who were ‘big headaches’ for Man United last season are no longer an issue.
After a season where the club finished 15th and came away empty-handed, it’s hardly surprising to hear talk of problems. There were plenty.
Amorim has been working through those issues, whether it’s trying to fix a side that struggled for goals or moving on players who didn’t fit his plans, both on and off the pitch.
Dalot told CBS that two players who caused United trouble last season are now expected to play key roles – not because they’ve changed, but because they’re now part of the squad.
He said: “I’m very happy that they [Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo] are on our side now because every time we went to play against them, they always gave us big headaches.
“They don’t need to prove anything in terms of trying to adapt to the country. They know the league well. They just have to come to a big club. They are two big characters, humble people. They have adapted really well.
“Now they just need to adapt to the manager, what he asks them to do, and for us to create connections, dynamics on the pitch so we can be even better.”
Dalot’s comments highlight the value of United’s moves for Cunha and Mbeumo. Not only have they brought in two players with proven Premier League experience, but they’ve also weakened teams they’ll be facing during the season.
As United look to bring in a striker next, this approach could shape how they move forward in the market. Ollie Watkins would fit that same mould, strengthening United while taking away a key player from Aston Villa.
If you look at what it means for their attack, there’s a real impact. Cunha has 15 goals, Mbeumo has 20, and Watkins has 16 – that’s 51 goals coming into a team that managed just 44 last season. That kind of firepower could make all the difference.
Three headaches could be removed in one summer, and now it’s other teams who’ll be dealing with them each week.
