Tottenham Hotspur have a golden opportunity to bounce back from an underwhelming domestic campaign by winning the UEFA Europa League trophy.
Amid an injury crisis, Spurs have had to lean heavily on their young talents such as Lucas Bergvall, Archie Gray, Mathys Tel and a couple more, and they’ve managed a respectable European run. Winning the Europa League would not only end their 17-year long trophy drought but also open their door for next season’s Champions League football and give a boost to their transfer spending.
Chairman Daniel Levy also has to focus on wiping out the deadwood from the squad, and by doing so, the club would generate much-needed funds to rebuild the squad. That includes offloading few players currently out on loan who don’t have a future at White Hart Lane. And one such player who is keen on leaving Tottenham permanently is Bryan Gil.
Bryan Gil was allowed to leave the club last summer as he was surplus to requirements for Ange Postecoglou. He decided to join La Liga side Girona on a season-long loan, and as part of the winger’s new Spurs contract, there is a €15m release clause inserted. Girona have been given priority to trigger it before June 30 if they want to, but they are expected to face competition for his signature.
Gil was enjoying his time at Girona before he suffered a knee problem in March. He has been ruled out for the rest of the campaign after undergoing knee surgery. Before that, the Spaniard racked up three goals and as many assists in 25 league appearances for Michel’s side.
Despite his injury, Villarreal have entered the race for Gil’s signature. They have identified the Tottenham outcast as one of their main targets to improve the squad for 2025/26 season. However, there are more clubs now keeping tabs on his situation.
According to Spanish outlet La Razon, clubs from Middle East and USA are ‘eager to tempt’ Gil with ‘dizzying’ offers. The player prefers to continue in Spain and finds Villarreal an ‘attractive option’ since they qualified for next season’s Champions League. As things stand, Villarreal have not upped their ante to sign the former Sevilla man.
Spurs want to offload Gil permanently as he has failed to live up to his potential at N17, and the more clubs enter the race for his signature, the better Levy’s chances become to sell him at a higher price than his mooted €15m release clause.
