'Don’t Drop Deep'– Amorim’s Tactical Message to Bruno Fernandes

Manchester United is heading into one of the most questionable seasons in the last decade. Multiple players are leaving the club, new players are coming in, and those who stayed under Rúben Amorim will have to adapt to his style of play — and Bruno Fernandes is one of them.

The Portuguese midfielder has been one of the Premier League’s best since joining Manchester United. Now, with several spots opening in the starting lineup, Bruno is set to return to a role he hasn’t played in a long time. Amorim sent him a message while addressing the situation in the locker room.

Considering Manchester United recently signed Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton and knowing his main qualities, the manager wants Bruno to play deeper at times—but stay closer to midfield than the opposition’s area—and play aggressively to support Cunha and Rasmus.

“He [Bruno Fernandes] can play deeper. We can change during the match, but I think 10 is a good position for him, and sometimes we miss him in that role when he drops back to get the ball. I like when he has the ball, and with the threat that Bryan [Mbeumo], Rasmus [Højlund], and Matheus [Cunha] pose in space, we need to use the quality of a player like Bruno,” Amorim said.

Among the Premier League’s big five teams, Manchester United faces the most uncertainty in the near future. With many players leaving, others arriving, and the club going through financial issues, Amorim will have to build a team good enough to compete for domestic titles. On the other hand, if players who were allowed to look for new clubs decide to stay, Rúben is more than happy to have them in the squad.
