Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has made it clear how his team plan to set up when they face Manchester United.

The Red Devils travel to St James’ Park looking for a first away win in the league since November, while Michael Carrick will be hoping to extend his unbeaten run as interim manager.

United won 3-1 when the sides met at Old Trafford earlier this season, but they haven’t had much joy on Tyneside in recent years, with their last victory there coming back in 2020/21.

Despite the challenges of an inconsistent season and dealing with several injuries, Newcastle still have a strong record at home. Their only two defeats at St James’ Park this year have come against Tottenham Hotspur and AFC Bournemouth.

Before the game, Howe spoke to the press and was quite open about how his team plan to set up. Speaking to The Chronicle, he said: “Our intention in every game is to get into them, be a proactive team rather than a reactive team. Attack them.”

“They have tweaked things tactically; they have a really good atmosphere there.

“You can see an upturn in their general performance; they have some really good players. It is a chance for us to rediscover our best form at home.”

It’s clear Howe wants his side to be on the front foot, but that might actually play into Carrick’s hands.

The Red Devils have looked comfortable under Carrick when they’ve been allowed space in behind. Both Manchester City and Arsenal tried to go toe-to-toe with United and ended up getting hit on the break. Carrick will hope for more of the same this time out.

During his media appearance, Howe also shared the latest fitness news on his squad.

Bruno Guimaraes, who has been linked with a move to United, remains sidelined with a hamstring problem and isn’t due back until April, leaving Newcastle without their skipper.

Howe added that Nick Woltemade might also miss out through illness: “Jacob Ramsey trained fine yesterday. Potentially a sickness in the squad, Nick Woltemade hasn’t trained through illness, but we will give him every chance for tomorrow,” he explained.

Tino Livramento is another doubt heading into the game, while Fabian Schar and Emil Krafth remain out long-term and won’t feature against United.

Carrick is expected to update reporters on the conditions of Matthijs de Ligt, Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw and Mason Mount during his own press conference later today.
