Over the last 21 months, Manchester United’s recruitment has leaned harder into South America, with INEOS keen to move early for talent.
That approach was highlighted by Diego Leon’s arrival from Cerro Porteno, having signed him in the winter ahead of his summer 2025 move.
Since then, United have also signed Colombian teenager Cristian Orozco, another academy-focused addition set for 2026.
Together, those moves show a clear pattern with United wanting to secure young signings before bigger clubs interest inflate their value.
It also shows how The Red Devils are now putting just as much effort into their long-term recruitment plan as signing players for immediate impact.
Now, attention has reportedly shifted to Ecuador, where LDU Quito midfielder Ederson Castillo is firmly on the radar.
Ecuadorian outlet Futbol Ecuador report United have opened direct contact with the player’s club over a potential deal.
Whilst that communication does not mean a bid is definitely coming, it moves things beyond simple scouting checks.
As part of the communiction between clubs, LDU Quito have made United aware of their asking price for the midfiedler, with them valuing Ederson Castillo at £5.6 million (€6.4 million, $7 million).
Crucially, the same reports insist the fee has not scared United away from the conversation, instead, contact is said to be ongoing, suggesting the valuation is not viewed as a deal-breaker.
The 17-year-old defensive midfielder, has already racked up five appearances for Quito, however is only averaging at 28 minutes per appearance.
Despite this limited time on the pitch, Castillo has registered his first goal contribution for the club, setting up Lautaro Pastran in their 4-2 loss to Universidad Catolica in September.
LDU Quito clearly rate the teenager highly, describing him locally as a “crown jewel” asset worth protecting.
However, as they’ve set a price tag for his departure, it shows they certainly aren’t against lossing thier prospect, with United firmly in the race for his signature.
