Manchester United supporters have seen several former players take different paths after leaving Old Trafford, with some continuing their careers across Europe while others have embraced new challenges further afield.
The Red Devils’ recent history has produced a number of experienced forwards who remained fan favourites despite relatively short spells at the club.
Even years after departing the club, former United stars continue to attract attention whenever major developments emerge in their careers.
For many veterans, the latter stages of their playing days can often become the toughest, particularly when injuries begin to outweigh time spent on the pitch.
One experienced striker has now reached another significant milestone after bringing an emotional chapter of his career to a close.
Former Manchester United forward Edinson Cavani has officially ended his time with Boca Juniors after reaching a mutual agreement with the Argentine giants to terminate his contract.
The Uruguayan completed the necessary paperwork on Tuesday, formally ending a spell that began midway through 2023 and saw him become one of the club’s highest-profile signings in recent South American football.
Although his time at La Bombonera featured important goals, moments of quality and unwavering support from Boca supporters, persistent injury problems increasingly restricted his involvement throughout 2026.
The 39-year-old had already come under growing scrutiny in Argentina this year, with several media figures suggesting retirement after another frustrating spell on the sidelines, while fitness concerns continued to limit his availability.
Edinson Cavani was also linked with a return to European football during last summer’s transfer window, with Cypriot side Pafos among the clubs reportedly interested in signing the veteran striker.
His departure also leaves Boca needing to rethink their attacking options ahead of a demanding campaign, with the coaching staff now expected to assess potential reinforcements despite having internal alternatives.
Edinson Cavani confirmed his departure in an emotional farewell video, reflecting on both the highs and the disappointments of his Boca journey.
“Hello, Bosteros. Now the time has finally come for me to tell you a few things that I discovered and felt along the way during these years.”
The former United striker made it clear that joining Boca was a decision he never regretted.
“The first is that I will never regret having made the decision to come in 2023, when I signed to fulfill that desire I had to play here.”
He also described how representing Boca changed his daily mentality.
“Then, when I started to get to know this world, the famous Boca world, I felt that way of life gave me even more reasons to prepare myself and give 100% in every match.”
“The journey begins in a magical way, often feeling and living moments that make you wish time would stand still so you can keep enjoying them.”
However, injuries eventually prevented him from making the impact he had hoped for.
“Hard moments, ones I never imagined I would live through and that kept me a little from being able to leave a mark at this beautiful and enormous club.”
He admitted those setbacks became increasingly difficult to accept.
“In the midst of those moments, with that desire right on the surface every day, today I have to face a situation that I truly thought would not be as difficult as it was, even reaching the point of no longer leaving me with the possibility of competing alongside my teammates.”
Cavani added that the physical limitations were among the toughest experiences of his career.
“One of the greatest sadnesses I have had to live through in my career and what kept me on the sidelines lately.”
“I want you to remember that this is not going to overshadow what my family and I went through all this time. Because, as a coach I once had taught me, the journey is the reward, and the journey was beautiful.”
He also revealed that Boca had gained lifelong supporters through his family’s experience.
“Today that famous Boca world has six more fans who will always want Boca to do very well.”
The veteran striker thanked those who helped make his dream move possible.
“I can’t help but thank all the people who made it possible for me to fulfill that desire I had to play here.”
“To all of La 12 and the people who pushed us to give more and more and to feel what it feels like inside this stadium.”
“To everyone who was part of the day-to-day life at the training ground: the kit staff, everyone in the kitchen, and all those who played a part so that we could live well and be well every day in order to give our all.”
Cavani concluded his farewell by promising he would always remain a Boca supporter.
“I thank everyone, the whole Boca world, and I send you a very big hug. I will never stop wishing you the very best and supporting you from wherever I may be. A big kiss.”
The former Manchester United striker leaves Boca having scored 28 goals and supplied four assists in 81 appearances across all competitions.
Cavani spent two seasons at Old Trafford between 2020 and 2022, registering 19 goals in 59 appearances, with his outstanding 2020/21 campaign producing 17 goals and five assists in 39 matches.
