A new name has emerged as a potential summer solution to Manchester United’s defensive concerns.

With uncertainty and inconsistency plaguing the backline, Manchester United are among several clubs tracking David Affengruber ahead of the upcoming transfer window, as reported by Mundo Deportivo.

The 25-year-old centre-back, currently with Elche, has impressed in La Liga since joining on a free transfer from SK Sturm Graz in 2024.

His performances this season have not gone unnoticed.

David Affengruber recently delivered a standout display against Atletico Madrid, registering both a goal and an assist in a 3-2 victory, a showing that reportedly caught the attention of Diego Simeone and his recruitment team.

United, however, are far from alone in the race.

Spanish sides including Villarreal, Real Betis and Sevilla are all monitoring the Austrian international, while Atletico Madrid are also considering adding him to their shortlist.

From a financial standpoint, the deal looks attractive.

Elche are believed to value the defender at around £17 million, and with just one year remaining on his contract after this season, this summer could represent their last opportunity to secure a meaningful fee.

For United, the interest is no surprise given their current defensive situation.

Matthijs de Ligt is only just returning to individual training after a long-term back injury, leaving a gap that has been difficult to fill consistently.

Lisandro Martinez has also endured injury setbacks throughout the campaign, disrupting any rhythm at the heart of the defence.

Meanwhile, Harry Maguire, who recently signed a one-year extension, remains a valuable source of experience, but at 33, careful rotation will be key moving forward.

That explains why United are exploring options like Affengruber, players who offer reliability without commanding a massive fee.

However, his potential arrival would also raise important questions.

With Leny Yoro still developing and Ayden Heaven beginning to break through, adding another centre-back could complicate their pathways into the first team.

From a tactical perspective, Affengruber’s physicality and ability to contribute at both ends of the pitch make him an intriguing option.

But whether he becomes a key piece of United’s rebuild, or simply another name on a growing shortlist, will depend on how the club chooses to reshape its defence this summer.
