English Premier League could postpone weekend fixtures after death of Queen Elizabeth II

Buckingham Palace announced on Thursday that Queen Elizabeth II, Britain's longest-reigning monarch who held the throne for 70 years, died at the age of 96.

The news could impact the sports world through the weekend.

As noted by Sky Sports, the English Football League has already confirmed that Friday's fixtures have been postponed as a mark of respect for Queen Elizabeth II. Burnley were set to face Norwich City, while Tranmere Rovers were going to take on Stockport County.

Per an ESPN piece, both the EFL and English Premier League are expected to make a decision about the weekend's games as early as Friday morning.

"The Premier League is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Her Majesty The Queen, Elizabeth II," the English top-flight said in a brief statement. "Our thoughts and condolences are with The Royal Family and everyone around the world mourning the loss of Her Majesty."

Thursday's UEFA Europa League and Europa Conference League matches involving English clubs went on as scheduled. Arsenal held a moment of silence before the second half of their Europa League game against Zurich shortly after the news of the Queen's passing broke, and Manchester United and Real Sociedad also honored Her Majesty before they kicked off at Old Trafford later on Thursday evening local time:

The NFL announced it will hold a moment of silence to recognize the death of Queen Elizabeth II before the start of Thursday's regular-season opener between the Buffalo Bills and Los Angeles Rams, and the NHL released a statement.

"The National Hockey League mourns the passing and celebrates the remarkable life of Queen Elizabeth II," that organization said. "She held a special place in the hearts of Canadians and, during her 70-year-reign, connected with our game in memorable ways."
