Everton are welcoming bottom-of-the-table Wolverhampton Wanderers to the Hill Dickinson Stadium for their midweek match. Everton will need these three points to take them back up into the top 10, after their disappointing loss to Brentford at the weekend. Here is our predicted Everton lineup.
Everton displayed a defensive nightmare in their 4-2-3-1 formation after a 4-2 defeat against Brentford on January 4. Igor Thiago proved too quick for the Everton defence as he managed to score a hattrick for Brentford. Everton were met with boos from their fans at the full-time whistle after the defensive calamity they witnessed.
Jack Grealish assisted both Everton goals, which proved not enough in the end. Michael Keane returned to the starting lineup after he missed the December 30 game against Nottingham Forest.
Jordan Pickford started in goal with Jake O’Brien, James Tarkowski, Michael Keane and Vitaliy Mykolenko playing at the back. James Garner and Tim Iroegbunam lined up as the defensive midfield with Dwight McNeil, Tyler Dibling and Jack Grealish occupying the attacking midfield, Thierno Barry finished the starting lineup up front.
The Toffees have managed to collect points and keep clean sheets against lower placed teams in the table, whilst struggling to get points from the big teams. It hasn’t always been comfortable though, as Everton struggled for a 0-0 draw against second-bottom Burnley just before the new year.
With numerous key players missing from the squad for various reasons, the transfer window won’t offer them much relief, as David Moyes admitted that it is “more unlikely than likely” that Everton will make any signings this month, however the club are “still looking out there to see what there is.”
Harrison Armstrong was recalled from his loan spell at Preston North End to try and add some options for David Moyes, but Moyes hopes to send him back to Deepdale to develop his education.
There will not be any players available to return for the fixture against Wolves, with Carlos Alcaraz, Seamus Coleman, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, and Jarrad Branthwaite all still out on injury.
Iliman Ndiaye and Idrissa Gueye remain out of the squad as they continue their Africa Cup of Nations campaign with Senegal.
