Ex-Man Utd left-back Alvaro Fernandez stuns Spanish media with standout Real Madrid moment

Manchester United have a long list of transfer decisions they’d probably like back, and letting Alvaro Fernandez go is shaping up to be one of them.

Unable to secure a regular spot in the first team, Fernandez was sold to Benfica in 2024 for just £5m.

Fast-forward a year, and he is now at Real Madrid following a £43m transfer. His rise has been rapid, and he is looking every bit the star in the making.

United did benefit from a sell-on clause, but there is likely still some frustration at Carrington. They either missed out on a much larger fee, or perhaps should have held onto him altogether.

Spanish media have already been praising Fernandez’s start at Madrid, with Xabi Alonso making the 22-year-old a regular starter right away.

He has played every minute of Madrid’s first three league games, and they have already taken an early lead at the top of La Liga.

Alonso’s side secured a 2-1 victory over Mallorca in their latest match, thanks to two quick first-half goals by Arda Guler and Vinicius Junior.

Fernandez had several attacking moments in that match, but his standout play came with a crucial clearance off the line to keep Madrid in control.

Alvaro Fernandez draws Spanish media praise

In just a couple of seasons, Fernandez has gone from being overlooked at United to becoming a regular starter for Real Madrid.

His most recent showing was probably his strongest yet, and the Spanish press did not hesitate to highlight his impact.

Mundo Deportivo described his performance as “Protagonist,” adding: “He was Real Madrid’s best player. Decent in defence and always creating danger in attack.”

AS also took note, saying: “He’s improving with each match. From his position at left back, his influence is growing, especially offensively rather than defensively.”

A second AS article even referred to him as an “acrobat,” noting how he managed to deflect a powerful shot from Samu Costa.
