Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap is leaning towards joining Manchester United

Manchester United’s Premier League season has been nothing short of disastrous, with the club languishing in 16th place. Their only glimmer of hope lies in the Europa League, where they’ve managed to reach the final and will face fellow strugglers Tottenham Hotspur.

Ruben Amorim was appointed mid-season, replacing Erik ten Hag and the results have only gone south since. The Portuguese tactician was expected to replicate his exploits at Sporting CP, but the reality has proven to be much different. That said, one can only truly start judging him next season.

The upcoming season will be huge in determining what the future holds for Man Utd. Reinforcements are undoubtedly the need of the hour and the Red Devils have almost no margin for error and need to ensure that every single transfer turns out to be a success in the near future.

One player that has been linked with a move to Man Utd for quite some time now is Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap. Now, as per Talk Sport, the ex-Manchester City starlet is leaning towards a move to Old Trafford, despite his past allegiances with the Etihad Stadium. Chelsea are also interested in the youngster.

Massive potential

Having come through the ranks at Manchester City, Delap made the move to Ipswich Town and caught the eye with his performances for the Tractors this season. Despite the 12 goals that he has scored, it wasn’t enough to save his side from relegation to the Championship.

The interesting thing that has happened as a consequence of Ipswich’s relegation is that his release clause of £30million is now active. For a cash-strapped institution like Man Utd, who might not have much spending power this summer (unless they qualify for the CL), it would make Delap an almost unavoidable prospect.

Man Utd’s striking woes this season have been well-documented. Rasmus Hojlund has been erratic at best in front of the goal, and even that is a very generous assessment of his campaign. Joshua Zirkzee has shown that he is more suitable for playing behind a natural target man.

Signing Delap might be a gamble, but one that would be taken based on potential. Based on whatever he has shown, the 22-year-old striker is showing signs of becoming a bonafide English star, and this is a risk that Man Utd need to be willing to take. The player might also welcome this move as he would be a guaranteed starter at Old Trafford.

Whether Delap is met with scepticism or support from the fans due to his Man City past, one thing is clear: United need fresh energy and untapped potential, and the 22-year-old striker offers both. It’s a calculated risk, but in their current state, it’s exactly the kind of move United need to make. Time will tell if this gamble pays off.
