The USMNT has many players in Europe, and while some are at top clubs with significant minutes, others play for 'smaller' clubs with fewer minutes. With the 2026 World Cup less than a year away, players will need to choose wisely for the upcoming season.
Josh Sargent is a player who may be on his way out of Norwich City and will play in the Championship next season. He has received offers from Burnley, who will play in the Premier League, and Wolfsburg from the Bundesliga.
A deal with Wolfsburg has collapsed after the player reportedly rejected a return to Germany after playing for Werder Bremen before his move to Norwich.
With the move to Wolfsburg ruled off, former USMNT players believe that decision could hurt his place in the 2026 USMNT World Cup roster.
In the Call It What You Want Podcast, Jimmy Conrad, Charlie Davis, and Tony Meola discussed Sargent's options outside of Norwich. Between Burnley and Wolfsburg, the German side was an ideal destination for Sargent in the former USMNT player's eyes.
Davis believes the choice was easy as Sargent has experience playing in the Bundesliga, where he found success. Meola mentions how Wolfsburg is also likely to stay in the first division rather than Burnley in the Premier League.
Charlie Davis: "It's a no-brainer. It's Wolfsburg. He already had success at Werder Bremen. He understands the Bundesliga... I think they're going to create chances. They're not going to be a team that's looking to defend and protect leads; defend first. You go to Burnley, recently promoted, you know it is 'Guys, we gotta hang on, we gotta just defend first...' the mentality is different."
Meola and Conrad agree with Davis' point about Wolfsbrug being a better option for Sargent, especially if the striker aims towards receiving calls up for the national team. Meola mentions the challenge for promoted teams to remain in the Premier League.
Tony Meola: "We're starting to see this disparity between teams that come up now and the teams that are in the Premier League already. It's really difficult for teams to survive now because of the money and the roster build and all that stuff."
Sargent played 32 matches for Norwich City in the Championship last season. He started in 28 games, where he scored 15 goals and provided five assists. Norwich finished 13th in the Championship with 57 points.
Sargent tallied his best season with Norwich in the Championship last season with 20 goal contributions. His second-best was in the 2023-24 season with 18 goal contributions.
The last time Norwich was in the Premier League was during the 2021-22 season. Sargent featured in Norwich's friendly against Northampton on July 12.
