Europe’s big clubs have been closely monitoring Atalanta’s Argentinian striker Mateo Retegui. Tottenham, Arsenal, and Manchester United have followed Retegui’s outstanding performance.
However, there may be some horses that fall along the way to the finish line. Atalanta is unwilling to sell its player unless an offer of 55-60 million euros is received.
The Boy Hotspur understands that Tottenham may also make a move for Retegui, based on the poor returns that they have seen so far in respect of their existing personnel. Richarlison still isn’t reliable in front of the goal, and Dominic Solanke, who looks every inch a Premier League star, but again, isn’t scoring frequently enough.
Manchester United, which is also experiencing uncertainty in the attacking line, sees Mateo Retegui as one of the options. Retegui is on United’s summer transfer list alongside the likes of Viktor Gyokeres, Benjamin Sesko and Victor Osimhen.
The Red Devils have also watched Atalanta’s striker many times throughout the season, and their scouts have a positive opinion of the player.
Arsenal is in search of a reliable striker and may well identify Mateo Retegui as a suitable option.
Our view
Tottenham have plenty of decent, and better than decent, attacking options, but the recurring stone in the shoe is when will the next Harry Kane arrive? Yes, the Englishman was a generational talent, but where is the next Spurs striker coming from?
This is a key area, to understate it, with so many potential strikers having come to North London and frankly failed to live up to expectations over the years.
What Spurs need is another Jermain Defoe, a player who can provide that link between the fans and himself whilst just getting the job done, again and again.
For too long, Tottenham have seemingly handed out participation medals to players who aren’t quite up to the task, but seem to try hard. Is Paratici the man to identify the missing piece of the puzzle for us, and is Retegui a player he and Spurs would want?
