Fabrizio Romano confirms Tottenham enquiry for Serie A star; summer transfer likely

Tottenham have enquired about Genoa defender Koni De Winter ahead of a possible summer swoop

Tottenham Hotspur were forced to dip their toes in the January transfer window for reinforcements owing to an injury crisis. They signed Antonin Kinsky, Kevin Danso and Mathys Tel to bolster a squad that was severely stretched at one point of time.

Danso’s acquisition on loan from RC Lens came in the wake of the season-ending knee injury to Radu Dragusin. Currently, Ange Postecoglou has just three fit proper centre-backs at his disposal—Danso, Micky Van de Ven and Cristian Romero. Archie Gray and Ben Davies are options as well, but the latter is out of contract at the end of the season.

The Lilywhites will be hoping to continue their strategy of investing in young talent with bags of potential and room to develop in the future. They are expected to be in the summer market for defensive reinforcements, with Romero attracting interest from Atletico Madrid of late and Dragusin linked with a return to Serie A.

Tottenham have reportedly enquired about Genoa defender Koni De Winter earlier this month. The young defender has grown in stature since moving to Genoa from Juventus in 2023, initially on loan before a buy obligation clause was triggered last year. The Belgian has played 49 times in all competitions for the Italian side thus far, netting three goals.

A hamstring injury ruled him out for two months earlier this season, yet Koni De Winter seems to have done enough to catch the eye of Tottenham. Spurs are not expected to have a free run at the Genoa defender, though. Manchester United, West Ham United, Inter Milan, FC Porto, Bayern Munich, and Borussia Dortmund are all keeping tabs on him.

Reputed Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano has now taken to his official X account to reveal that De Winter is expected to leave Genoa at the end of the season. While it remains unclear where the Antwerp-born talent ends up, the transfer news king has confirmed that the player is attracting ‘strong interest’ from English and Italian clubs, with potential approaches already taking place.

Now, De Winter’s desire to end his time at Genoa possibly offers a boost to Tottenham in landing him. Spurs’ defensive issues have been well-documented throughout the season, and they must recruit a defender who is reliable and can compete with the current crop.

With the Belgian attracting interest from several clubs, it will be interesting to watch whether Daniel Levy can lure him to N17 in the summer.
