As Tottenham Hotspur lost 2-0 to Fulham on Sunday, speculation surrounding the future of Ange Postecoglou have only increased. It was their 15th league defeat of the season—with only the bottom four clubs in the division having tasted defeat more than the north London club.
It was another disappointing performance and result for the Lilywhites and Ange Postecoglou—who are failing to garner any sort of momentum. The Australian tactician must be frustrated as he would have expected his Spurs side to use their recent 3-1 victory against AZ Alkmaar in the Europa League as a springboard to return to winning ways in the Premier League at Craven Cottage.
While Spurs have been enduring persistent injury problems this season, their style of play, control in matches, performances and results have all regressed under the 59-year-old. The club bosses and the fans are naturally growing concerned at how easily the opposition can pick Tottenham out.
Now, reputed Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano has dropped the latest update on Postecoglou and Tottenham. He says Spurs honcho Daniel Levy’s focus is helping his gaffer progress to the next rounds of the Europa League and there has been no talk of the Australian’s sack from any sources close to the club.
“At the moment, Tottenham’s full focus is on the present. Especially the Europa League, as a crucial target for Spurs this season. Nothing else coming from sources close to the club,” Fabrizio Romano exclusively wrote in his GIVEMESPORT newsletter.
Spurs have taken one step forward and three backward this season. Every time they have won a game and tried to build on it, they have either drawn or lost the next one. Despite the return of key players in recent weeks, Tottenham are still losing games in the league.
Ange’s side dropped to 14th in the table following a 2-0 defeat at Fulham. Questions are being raised about the future of the Greek-Aussie tactician at White Hart Lane, and if results do not improve, he may be shown the exit door at the club. As the league ship has well and truly sailed for Tottenham, their only saving grace remains the possibility of winning the Europa League.
And Levy is backing Postecoglou to go until the end in the Europa League and win the competition, rather than encouraging any sack news. The writing is there on the wall for Postecoglou—regardless he wins the Europa League or not.
