Paris Saint-Germain announced on Thursday that it came to terms on a three-year, free transfer agreement with Georginio Wijnaldum.

Wijnaldum’s Liverpool run will be officially coming to an end in a few weeks when his contract with the Premier League side expires.

At one point, it seemed inevitable that Wijnaldum would join Barcelona and become the Catalan club’s third free transfer signing of the month.

In the end, PSG made a successful late push to bring Wijnaldum to the capital club.

In speaking exclusively to PSG Talk, football journalist Fabrizio Romano laid out the details behind this transfer saga.

PSG manager Mauricio Pochettino played a key role in persuading the Dutch talent to join the French powerhouse. The Argentine personally reached out to the Liverpool midfielder to explain him to why he should snub Barca and instead move to PSG.

Romano details that the Argentine manager talked to Wijnaldum about how he long wanted to coach him. Pochettino aimed to see Wijnaldum join Tottenham in 2016, but the midfielder opted to sign with Liverpool instead.

Wijnaldum was much convinced by Pochettino’s pitch, which also included talks about PSG’s successful project as of late.

Now with Wijnaldum in the fold, Pochettino now has another talent capable of playing multiple midfield positions. This will be key considering that PSG will head into next season as serious contenders in three different competitions.
