With Joao Felix out the door for Saudi Arabia, there was briefly some panic around the future of Marc Cucurella after it was reported from Spanish sources that Cristiano Ronaldo wanted the Spaniard at Al-Nassr.
Speaking on one of his shows, Romano updated the status of the left-back. According to him, Chelsea are actually looking to discuss a new contract with the player and his representatives. This is likely to be part of a wage increase under the club’s structure following some stellar performances from the defender.
It would also help to reiterate that he isn’t up for sale even if Ronaldo and Al-Nassr want to come swarming, it could lock the Spaniard in to more years as a blue after his emergence as an elite talent in the second half of the season.
With a real lack of rotational options available the former Brighton & Hove Albion man played a lot of minutes across all competitions in the latest campaign. He was used in a number of roles, he inverted to form a double pivot in midfield, he overlapped on the left, and he even underlapped or drifted in to the number ten role at times.
This positioning in and around the box made him an effective box crasher from January onward as he notched some important goals by arriving into the area to get on the end of crosses or quick moves. He ended the term with 11 goal contributions and totalled over 4,000 minutes. Putting in energetic performances that demanded he race back to defend the left flank anytime a move broke down.
This emergence followed up a starring role in Spain winning the Euros in 2024 which has landed Cucurella a spot as an elite player in his position. For that alone, it’s time for Chelsea to reward him with a new contract to ward off any potential suitors.
