Manchester United are likely to be involved in some transfer activity in the January transfer window after a very topsy-turvy start to the 2023/24 season, in which they have won just five of their first 11 games across all competitions. It looks like they might be selling one midfielder too.

Manchester United Likely To Make Donny van de Beek Decision in January

What Lies in the Future for Van de Beek?

Fabrizio Romano has stated that Donny van de Beek is expected to leave Old Trafford in the January transfer window to put an end to a miserable career at the club. He insists that his departure is now “very likely” after he almost left the club in the summer transfer window following some links to other clubs.

The journalist adds that the Dutch midfielder’s possible next destination is difficult to mention so early in the campaign, but that he was close to joining Real Sociedad in the summer before a deal broke down. Giving his own stance on Van de Beek’s situation at the Premier League club and his lack of game-time, Romano added: “It’s sad to see him struggle at Manchester United as he looked like such a fine prospect at Ajax, but I think he’s been really unlucky with injuries, and also didn’t receive the confidence he needed in some crucial moments under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.”

What Went Wrong?

When he was initially signed by Manchester United from Ajax in 2020, there was a lot of hype around the midfielder after he showed a lot of promise at the Dutch club. However, he failed to adapt to the English football scene and was not helped by other players being constantly played over him at Old Trafford.

The 26-year-old has made just 62 appearances for the Red Devils since his arrival and even went through a loan spell at Everton. He has made just three appearances this season, in which Erik ten Hag has given him a combined 21 minutes of game-time. Van de Beek, who is rumoured to earn a £120,000-a-week wage at the club, probably needs a move to another side that assures him regular game-time to get his career back on track.
