Manchester United have already finalised the signing of Bryan Mbeumo

Rúben Amorim has his squad under reconstruction again. Manchester United have completed the arrival of Bryan Mbeumo, and the signings of Matheus Cunha and Diego Leon were already official days ago. After a chaotic season, with offensive ups and downs and tactical doubts, the club needed clear answers ahead of the start of the 2025/26 season. Amorim has arrived in this new season with a fixed idea and is starting to put it into practice. The board, under pressure from recent failures and the noise in the offices, has started to make them move in earnest, and at last, there seems to be a direction, although the balance is still in doubt.

A shaky foundation and the need to rebuild

Manchester United have not been up to scratch in recent seasons. Amorim’s promises faded with a fragile defence, a midfield lacking pace and a disconnected attack. We finished 15th last season in the Premier League, with a goal difference that gave everything away. We didn’t score fluently, and we didn’t defend stoutly. Rasmus Højlund showed flashes of brilliance, but without consistency.

The Jadon Sancho experiment failed as he was loaned out to Chelsea. Marcus Rashford played well in bursts but fell out of favour under Amorim and was subsequently loaned out to Aston Villa. Antony, meanwhile, got lost in his own chaos and was loaned out to Real Betis. So, every summer is a renewal, but this time it seems different.

The rumours had been floating around for weeks that Amorim wanted quality wingers. The priority was to oxygenate the attack. Hence, those who didn’t fit in would leave. However, the moves were taking time until Mbeumo finally arrived.

Today, the signing of Bryan Mbeumo is now closed. The Cameroonian, a star at Brentford, arrives for £71 million. According to Fabrizio Romano, United are already thinking about their next step, and signing a number nine is a top priority. The club hopes to close that deal in the coming weeks, although it will depend on departures.

Now, if we talk about our new signing, Mbeumo is not just any random signing. He has a great range of qualities, attacking threat and character. He can play on the right or left, and does not drop his quality under pressure, as was seen last season. The 25-year-old is direct, electric, and constantly at the defenders. In Brentford, the Cameroon international supported the attack without Ivan Toney and showed that he can be an offensive leader. Amorim needs more players like that, who respond without beating about the bush.

A gamble that demands immediate success.

We like the step the club have taken. Mbeumo is a reliable player. With him and Cunha, the wingers have an identity, but that striker is missing. We can’t just rely on Højlund, who is not yet convincing. Zirkzee is a gamble, but he is not the answer. Amorim is definitely aware of that. That’s why the club are targeting a striker with Premier League experience. Ollie Watkins would be ideal. Even Dominic Calvert-Lewin would fit well in that 3-4-2-1 formation, but we can’t afford to fail.

What worries us is the cost. Selling Alejandro Garnacho, Rashford, Sancho or Antony to fund the new signing sounds drastic. Especially with Garnacho, who has cracking potential, but the others have to be sold. Meanwhile, Garnacho will fetch you the highest price, and if he needs to be sold to fund a quality striker, then we have to take that drastic step. The danger is to undersell and come up short. This summer could define a decade for United. Either we rebuild smartly, or we go down again.
