Tottenham Hotspur still have a lot of work to do in the transfer market, as the new season draws closer.
Spurs have welcomed Mathys Tel, Kota Takai, Mohammed Kudus and Joao Palhinha to N17 this summer, with new head coach Thomas Frank tasked with turning the club’s Premier League fortunes around after a disastrous last season. However, the Danish tactician’s transfer plans have been dealt two major blows following recent developments.
Son Heung-min’s abrupt departure to Los Angeles FC has left behind a void that is tough to fill this summer. Furthermore, James Maddison’s ACL rupture has ruled him out for the majority of the upcoming season, leaving Tottenham devoid of a creative player apart from Kudus. With Dejan Kulusevski also injured and will miss the opening games of the campaign, the signing of a new creative player has become an absolute necessity for the Lilywhites.
Tottenham have reportedly opened talks with Crystal Palace over a move for Eberechi Eze. They are planning to beat bitter north London rivals Arsenal to the 27-year-old’s signature.
Arsenal are also keen on the England international, whose £68m release clause expires on Friday (August 15). However, the Gunners must make sales before pressing ahead with their plans to sign the Crystal Palace star.
Eberechi Eze scored 14 goals across all competitions for Palace last season, including in their 1-0 win against Manchester City in the FA Cup final. He was a part of Oliver Glasner’s side that beat Liverpool in the FA Community Shield last weekend, although the creative midfielder did miss his penalty during the shootout win.
Now, transfer news guru Fabrizio Romano dropped the latest development surrounding Eze. The Italian journalist suggests Spurs are ahead of Arsenal in the race to sign the Palace ace, despite the Gunners’ long-standing interest.
“I think in this moment, Tottenham are ahead, because Tottenham are prepared to go very strong for Eberechi Eze,” Fabrizio Romano revealed on GIVEMESPORT’s Market Madness podcast.
“Arsenal like the player, Arsenal have always been in touch with his representatives, already in June, but at the moment, I think they are not advancing in these negotiations.
“Tottenham are trying to make it happen as soon as possible after the injury of James Maddison and also Son leaving. For Tottenham, it’s important to bring in new players, and so from what I’m hearing it’s a separate story from Savinho.
“Tottenham will try to get both and for Eberechi Eze, there are contacts ongoing with his agents and also with Crystal Palace. So, I think Tottenham, in this moment, are really pushing on this one. Let’s see if they can get it over the line.”
Tottenham have finally woken up and now appear to be working on multiple deals at the same time. Besides Eze, they are trying to wrap up a deal for Manchester City winger Savinho, who could come in at Spurs as a replacement for the departed Son.
Eze’s deal is a different one than Savinho, one Spurs are currently leading ahead of cross-town rivals Arsenal. Creativity was a problem last season and throughout the pre-season tour this summer, and after missing out on Gibbs-White in July, the Lilywhites want to go strong for the Palace man. It will be interesting to see how much we are ready to pay for the England international as Daniel Levy does not intend to meet the player’s release clause.
If we can bring in Savinho from Man City and beat Arsenal to Eze’s signature before the transfer deadline, it would be quite a show of ambition from Daniel Levy.
