Marcus Rashford’s move to La Liga has quickly caught the attention of Manchester United fans, with the homegrown forward making an immediate impression in Spain.
Once a key figure at Old Trafford, Rashford has built up an impressive record, scoring 138 goals in 426 games and becoming one of the club’s standout players since Sir Alex Ferguson stepped down.
However, last season saw things take a turn for the worse. Following Ruben Amorim’s arrival as manager, Rashford found himself out of favour and was left out of the squad for the December derby against Manchester City. That match marked a turning point in his United career.
He did not feature again after that, instead joining Aston Villa on loan until the end of the season. When Barcelona showed interest over the summer, he took up their offer without hesitation.
The British winger has settled well into life in Spain and looks nothing like the player who left Manchester United struggling for form earlier this year. According to Fabrizio Romano, he is keen to make his stay at Barcelona permanent and is working hard to convince the club’s decision-makers.
Rashford’s contract with Barcelona includes an option to buy, giving him plenty of motivation to turn his loan into a permanent move.
According to Graeme Bailey from United in Focus, it looks increasingly likely that Rashford will make the switch full-time, with the decision seeming more like a formality than a question.
The forward made a strong first impression, scoring twice against Newcastle United in the Champions League, including a stunning long-range effort at St. James’ Park.
He has continued that form with another goal against Sevilla over the weekend, bringing his tally to three goals and five assists in just 10 games. His efforts have not gone unnoticed by his new club.
Romano reported that Barcelona are internally pleased with how Rashford has settled in, noting his commitment and attitude as he looks to make the most of his opportunity.
“I can tell you Rashford is very happy with the city, with the league, with the club, with the manager, with the teammates.
“Rashford loves his new life at Barcelona, he is fully focused on Barca. He’s not even thinking about a Manchester United return from the loan, and maybe making it back to United one day.
“I can also tell you that the feeling internally at Barca is very positive with the behaviour of Marcus Rashford.
“Not just the performances, the numbers are very good, but how he’s behaving. Very serious, professional, training very hard. They can see how he really wants to succeed at Barcelona,” the transfer expert revealed on his YouTube channel.
Looking back to last winter, Rashford’s reputation hasn’t been this strong since his standout period under Erik ten Hag in the 2022/23 season, when United finished third in the Premier League and lifted the Carabao Cup against Newcastle United.
Under Amorim, he found himself sidelined, with the manager openly critical of Rashford’s ‘standards’, saying they didn’t align with what he expected.
This led to reduced playing time for the Wythenshawe native, who was excluded from selection for six weeks. Speaking just before Rashford’s loan move to Aston Villa, Amorim said: “Our team should be so much better with Rashford. But this Rashford, he has to change.
“If he changes, we are more than welcome to put a talent like Rashford [in the squad].
“And we need it. But in this moment, I think it’s really clear that we have to set some standards. We are waiting for Marcus, if he wants [to play] really, really bad.”
With Hansi Flick giving him both playing time and a supportive environment at Barcelona, it’s no surprise that Rashford has found his form again.
That kind of approach is exactly what can help a player like him thrive – something Amorim might now be regretting not providing during their time together at Old Trafford.
