Even with over £200m spent on signings this summer, Manchester United’s rebuild under Ineos is far from over, and another significant departure could be on the horizon.
Ineos have brought a new level of decisiveness to the club, cutting ties where necessary and moving away from Ed Woodward’s old approach of protecting book value.
Fabrizio Romano now reports that another important player could be set to leave next summer as part of the ongoing changes.
There was a stretch last season when it seemed Casemiro’s time at Manchester United was over, especially when Toby Collyer was getting starts ahead of him.
But credit to the Brazilian, he worked his way back into the squad and has become one of Ruben Amorim’s trusted players this season.
Casemiro has always had a reputation for stepping up in big matches, and with Bruno Fernandes now playing alongside him, Amorim has leaned on his experience even more. His leadership is well respected in the dressing room.
A move to Saudi Arabia came close last summer and there’s still some talk about it, but he stayed put and has played an important role this season.
Still, with his contract ending next summer and his wages among the highest at the club, United have a decision to make. No matter how well he’s played recently, justifying that salary long-term will be difficult.
Fabrizio Romano touched on this on his Here We Go podcast, saying: “It’s a strange situation for Casemiro because he is still a very important player for Manchester United… one of the most important players in the dressing room.”
Casemiro has done well to re-establish himself at Old Trafford and move past the perception of being a wage burden, but his long-term prospects were always limited.
He will turn 34 in February, and Ruben Amorim hasn’t been shy about the need for legs and athleticism in his midfield.
The Brazilian is doing an admirable job of plugging the gaps, but the athleticism will only trend one way with age, so it makes no sense for either party to continue with each other.
A move to Saudi Arabia could offer Casemiro a strong final contract, while United could redirect those wages towards a player better suited to their long-term plans.
He’ll always be remembered as someone who helped end United’s trophy drought, and his professionalism has set a standard. But given where he is in his career, extending his stay doesn’t align with the club’s future needs.
