Aston Villa are looking to secure Morgan Rogers with a new deal, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll stay put in the long run.

In his time under Unai Emery, Rogers has grown into a key part of the squad, making himself hard to replace.

The former Man City and Middlesbrough midfielder hasn’t just attracted interest from those two sides. Liverpool have also been rumoured to be watching him closely.

Earlier this week we reported that Villa were aiming to keep Rogers at the club by opening talks over a new contract, but there’s no guarantee that will be enough.

Morgan Rogers’ Aston Villa future and when he could leave

Speaking on the Here We Go podcast, Fabrizio Romano backed up claims that Aston Villa plan to make Rogers one of the club’s highest-paid players.

“There will be movements in terms of contract because in the summer transfer window, especially at the beginning of the summer, there was interest from Chelsea, interest from Tottenham, several clubs prepared to pay big money for Morgan Rogers,” he said.

“Aston Villa decided to keep the player, described as untouchable for the whole summer transfer window. Now, Aston Villa extended the contract of Matty Cash, Aston Villa extended the contract of McGinn in recent days, and the next one they want to extend is Morgan Rogers.”

What’s next for Morgan Rogers?

But according to Romano, while Villa are expected to hold firm in January, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Rogers move on come the end of the season.

“To reward the player with a better salary, there is a conversation ongoing with the player and his agent. At the moment, it’s not advanced, it’s not yet at that stage like Matty Cash or McGinn signing their contract in the recent days.

“There is still a need for more round of talks before saying it’s agreed, but Aston Villa are trying their best to keep their players, and so I don’t think a move in January is likely.”

Despite growing links with Chelsea over recent months, Spurs have shown more concrete interest. And if contract talks continue to drag on, Tottenham could find an opening to make a serious push.

Morgan Rogers’ England chances could be affected by January transfer

Now part of the England setup, Rogers still faces a battle to keep his spot in the squad ahead of next summer’s World Cup.

He has featured fairly regularly since Thomas Tuchel took over, but with Villa struggling for consistency, Rogers has to perform at the highest level week in, week out to stay in the picture.

Making a move now might seem appealing, but it also carries risk. A reduced role at a bigger club could limit his minutes and hurt his chances of being selected for the World Cup.

It may be better for him to stay put and continue playing regularly. With competition heating up and players like Phil Foden hitting form, sticking with Villa could help him maintain his place in Gareth Southgate’s plans.
