More than 1,500 people are feared dead following the pair of earthquakes that struck in Venezuela on June 24. Tragically, a South American soccer player's wife and children were found dead in the rubble.

Argentina footballer Lucas Trejo's wife and two children were among those found dead in the earthquake rubble.

"The devastating news was confirmed by Venezuelan club Deportivo La Guaira in a statement. Lucas is a player for Venezuela's second division club Marítimo de La Guaira," The New Express reported.

Just a few months ago, the Argentina soccer player was celebrating his wife's birthday on Instagram.

"Happy birthday my love!!! May God richly bless your life and continue to fulfill the desires of your heart.. It is a blessing for us as a family to have you and to move forward in the purpose we have together! With you everything is easier and more beautiful always.
Have the best year of your life (so far) and let's keep our eyes and hearts on Jesus that big surprises are coming your way. I love you yesterday, today and always! ❤️," he wrote on Instagram.

Trejo's club releases statement

Trejo's club released a statement, confirming the devastating news on social media over the weekend.

""From the #DLG we join the grief that overwhelms player Lucas Trejo, for the sensitive passing of his wife, Yanina Maranella, and of his children, Aaron and Ainhoa Trejo. Peace to their souls and comfort for Lucas and all his loved ones," they wrote.

The soccer player's family was reportedly in Playa Grande when the earthquakes struck. Their apartment reportedly collapsed.

"Our building in Playa Grande collapsed. I don't know anything about my family. Please pray for them and share this message in case someone saw them. I want to believe they weren't there. Please pray for my family," he wrote prior to the news of his family's death.
