After their last few games, Barcelona returned to the top of La Liga standings . With Real Madrid only one point behind, they couldn’t afford to drop any points in the game against Real Betis.
It didn’t take long for the score to open. Just six minutes after the first whistle, Barcelona’s defense got lost, allowing Antony to get the ball into Joan Garcia’s net. It was a dream start for the Sevillian team. Their focus quickly shifted from scoring to making sure that their opponents wouldn’t have the chance to equalize.
Real Betis’ efforts weren’t enough to stop Hansi Flick’s well-oiled machine. Just four minutes after Antony’s opener, Ferran Torres, assisted by Jules Koundé, made it 1-1. Before the game could return to its usual pace, El Tiburón scored his second goal of the evening, this time assisted by Roony Bardghji. Just like that, 13 minutes after the start of the game, Barcelona moved into the lead.
With the score tipped in their favor, the Catalans slowed the game to a more manageable pace. This doesn’t mean that there was no action on the field, quite the contrary. Both teams attempted to change the score, but after the tense start, neither managed to do so for quite some time. The next change in score came only in the 31st minute.
It was then that Pedri’s amazing pass allowed Bardghji to score his first-ever goal in La Liga. Barcelona wasn’t done quite yet. Only nine minutes later, Ferran made it a hat-trick in Seville, scoring after another assist from Pedri. Thanks to his efforts, the first half ended with 4-1 on the scoreboard.
Not long after the players returned to the field, the situation turned even worse for the already battered Betis. During one of Marcus Rashford’s attempts at changing the score, the ball hit the hand of one of the Sevillian defenders. A quick VAR check revealed that it was a situation worthy of a penalty. Lamine Yamal was the one to take it for his team. He easily converted it into a goal, making it 5-1 for Barcelona.
As the clock slowly began nearing the 90th minute, Betis saw a chance to change the score. The ball fell into Barcelona’s net, but the goal was called off for being offside. Still, the Sevillian team didn’t let that deter them. They pushed harder and harder until, five minutes before the end of standard time, Diego Llorente made it a 5-2 after a corner.
When it seemed like nothing more would happen in the game, Koundé’s unfortunate intervention led to a penalty being awarded to Betis. Cucho Hernández was the one to convert it into the last goal of the game. The final score, to the disappointment of Sevillian fans, was 5-3.
While the first half was taken straight out of Blaugrana’s wildest dreams, the second fell short of expectations. Still, the Catalan team left Sevilla with three points added to their La Liga campaign. No matter what happens in the games taking place tomorrow, they will remain at the top of the standings.
