Fenerbahce officially terminate former Manchester United midfielder’s contract

Fenerbahce have a recent history with former Manchester United employees.

Ex-United boss Jose Mourinho had a stint at the club over the 2024/25 season, but was sacked after just a year.

Earlier in the summer, the Turkish side then bought Mason Greenwood from Marseille in a £33.8m deal.

In the latest turn of events, Fenerbahce have terminated the contract of Sofyan Amrabat, a player who spent the 2023/24 season on loan at Manchester United following an excellent World Cup with Morocco.

Amrabat signed for Fenerbahce in the 2024/25 season after returning from loan at Manchester United.

The Moroccan played 45 times for the club, as well as being loaned out at Real Betis – where the Red Devils recently sent former winger Antony.

In an official statement on their website, the Turkish side confirmed the news and delivered the simple parting message, “We wish Sofyan Amrabat success in the next period of his career.”

It’s a bizaare termination considering Amrabat still had two years left on his deal with Mason Greenwood and co. in Turkey, but it appears the two parties no longer see fit in pursuing a future together.

It’s not the first time Amrabat has forced his way out of a club, after doing the same at Italian Serie A side Fiorentina after his Old Trafford exit.

Fenerbahce have started poorly in the Turkish Super Lig, winning once but losing another and sit in ninth-place after their first couple of matches.

Their future is to be without Sofyan Amrabat, who did feature in both games despite the club now confirming that the 30-year-old is exiting.

It will certainly be interesting as to where Amrabat turns up next after leaving Fenerbahce. Perhaps a return to Real Betis, where he enjoyed a loan last season, could be on the cards.
