Rio Ferdinand has broken his silence following the firing of Ruben Amorim from Manchester United, and he used Manchester City's Pep Guardiola as an example to explain Amorim's biggest mistake at Old Trafford.
"Ruben Amorim's biggest mistake was that he didn't adapt enough," Ferdinand said. "And I think that you have to adapt."
"And we've seen, I've always said this, Pep Guardiola comes into this league as the best manager in the world, right? He had to adapt; he didn't win a league in his first season. Why? Oh, he mentioned second balls, didn't know anything about second balls. Saw it, adapted, and worked accordingly," he added.
Ferdinand highlighted that Guardiola even adapts every year and has demonstrated it, for example, with his inverted full-backs strategy.
"And he adapts every other year. Do you know what I mean? Inverted wing-backs, full-backs, he never had that before. He adapts. They know they play outside, center-backs playing right and left-back. This is all about adapting to the league and to the terrain that he's actually going about. So that is my biggest thing with Ruben Amorim," Ferdinand concluded.
Manchester United fired Ruben Amorim on Monday. The Red Devils drew 1-1 against Leeds on Sunday, Jan. 4, and after the game, the Portuguese manager made some controversial statements. This led to a clash with the CEO and the director of football of the club.
"I just want to say I'm going to be the manager of this team and not just the coach. I was really clear on that. And that is going to finish in 18 months, and then everyone is going to move on," was part of what Amorim said.
According to reports, Omar Berrada, CEO, and Jason Wilcox, director of football, already had doubts about Amorim's system, and in the end, they fired him.
Among the possible replacements are Enzo Maresca and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, with both interested in taking the manager position.
According to the same report, Manchester United could leave Darren Fletcher in charge until the end of the 2025-26 season if it does not find a definitive, guaranteed substitute.
