Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes believes that the potential Europa League victory will help shape the future of the club. The Red Devils fanbase have tolerated a miserable campaign, as their club currently lies 16th in the Premier League table.
Man United suffered 18 losses in the Premier League from 37 games, securing only 39 points as inconsistency haunted them. The poor start to the season cost Erik ten Hag his job as Ruben Amorim took charge of the club.
The former Sporting CP boss enjoyed great success in Portugal, winning three league titles, establishing them at the top echelon. However, Amorim has faced many problems at United that have no answers from within the senior squad, which he inherited.
The Portuguese boss needs to use the summer transfer window to implement his ideas properly and kickstart his United project. The current team has failed to adjust to Amorim’s style, while they continue to struggle with individual inconsistencies this season.
However, United management are facing a financial problem at the moment, limiting their transfer budget until they can sell players. The Red Devils have too many players on inflated wages, who are surplus to requirements, having struggled for so long.
Speaking in the pre-match press conference (via Manutd.com), Fernandes highlighted the importance of the potential Europa League victory to help shape the future of the club. He said:
“As players, you just think about what we have ahead of us and what we have ahead of us is the chance to get our hands on the trophy. It won’t change the past. It won’t affect what the past has done for us either but what i can affect is the future. Probably, yes, winning a trophy gives a lot of things. In this case, a place in the Champions League and a lot of revenue for the club. It gets, obviously, more players wanting to come to the club.”
A potential Europa League victory will allow United to compete in next season’s Champions League competition, which has financial rewards. The Red Devils need every source of revenue as they plan to back Amorim financially to turn things around.
Fernandes’ far-sightedness should impress the United fanbase as it highlights his desire to drive the club back to the top. United fans are reeling from the frustrating campaign, only gotten worse when arch-rival Liverpool won the Premier League this season.
As the club’s captain, Fernandes has the opportunity to showcase his leadership qualities by playing a pivotal role in changing the trajectory of United’s future under Amorim.
