Things have been far from great for Chelsea once again this season, even if there has been clear improvements with performances.

The fact is though, that last week there was a stat going around that showed in terms of league position and results, Chelsea were in pretty much the same spot as they were in a year before, a period that saw Graham Potter get sacked and Frank Lampard coming in as an interim manager until the end of the season.

So that’s how bad it was, despite visibly better performances on the pitch and perhaps some bad luck with injuries.

The noise came once again last week and Chelsea fan anger spilled over, as well as media pressure and criticism. There was calls for Mauricio Pochettino to be sacked, and lots of criticism aimed at the players.

The Aston Villa win last week picked things back up and quietened that noise down for now, but the Chelsea players have been left feeling a bit aggrieved by it all, according to Ben Jacobs.

The journalist has just put his latest exclusive and extensive Chelsea column out today on SPTC, and part of many subjects he covered was regarding the results lately.

Jacobs said: “Chelsea’s 3-0 win at Aston Villa in the FA Cup was superb. All three goals were clinical finishes, and the Enzo free-kick had a bit of Messi magic about it.

“Enzo’s celebration said it all. There was a collective outpouring of passion from a group of players wanting to not just prove a point but quieten the noise.

“I think a fair few players feel aggrieved by some of the media coverage surrounding Chelsea. Even Mauricio Pochettino has said he’s sick of constantly having to explain about the young squad, injuries and developing project.”
