Tottenham are looking to bring in Everton star Jarrad Branthwaite in the summer

Tottenham need to strengthen their squad heading into next season after a disastrous domestic campaign. The Lilywhites finished the Premier League season just a place above the relegation zone, registering 22 losses along the way. However, Ange Postecoglou’s men managed to save their blushes by ending the 17-year wait for a major trophy and winning the Europa League against all odds.

But Spurs fans know that the European success is just papering over the cracks at N17 and they need to address the problems in the squad for next season. The North London club has the perfect chance to close the gap on its rivals next year, and bringing in reinforcements is the first step in achieving that.

The Lilywhites are already playing catch-up in the transfer market and they are slowly missing out on their intended targets. While other Premier League clubs are making moves and strengthening the team, Spurs are stuck in the same place due to the managerial situation at the club. Daniel Levy cannot bring in new players before sorting out Ange Postecoglou’s future at Hotspur Way.

Dan Plumley believes Tottenham will find it tough to land Everton star Jarrad Branthwaite

There is no secret that Tottenham are looking to add defensive reinforcements in the summer after a dismal domestic campaign. The Lilywhites are facing a massive squad overhaul, and bringing in new defenders will surely bolster the quality of the squad. The injury crisis in the backline and the lack of squad depth have also forced Daniel Levy to bring in a new centre-back.

It was reported earlier that Spurs are interested in signing Everton star Jarrad Branthwaite in the summer. Although there is a possibility that a deal can be struck, finance expert Dan Plumley believes that the Lilywhites will need to pay a ‘premium’ to land the England international at N17. Speaking to Goodison News, Plumley said,

“There are two factors in that. One is the Champions League, and the other is the English premium tax that you pay on transfers between those clubs. If you look at that situation, it’s highly likely that Everton would look to drive that price up. Spurs have just landed the Champions League, which we anticipate will be about a minimum of £70-£80million for an English club now under the new format.”

The finance expert added,

“When you know that’s happening with a club that wants to buy your player, you’re going to ramp the price up because A, you’re selling to a rival, and B, that rival has just landed a windfall. If that transfer is even going to get started or happen, then Everton will be looking to drive the price up from day one.”

Dan Plumley suggests that Everton will drive up Branthwaite’s price if Tottenham approach the Toffees for their defender in the coming weeks. The finance expert believes that Everton will increase the price as Spurs are playing Champions League football next year and they are also a direct rival of the Merseyside club. Plumley points out Spurs have earned £70-£80m by qualifying for European football, so Everton will look to take advantage of that.

Well, Tottenham need to bring in a new centre-back in the summer quickly. The Lilywhites face the risk of losing Cristian Romero for next season as the Argentine is linked with a move to Atletico Madrid, so Daniel Levy must sign a quality replacement to fill the void left behind by the Spurs No.17. And it fair to say that signing Jarrad Branthwaite would be a step in the right direction.
