Fiorentina forward Albert Gudmundsson can hardly believe that Manchester United let David De Gea leave as a free agent, allowing him to join the Viola one season later, as he called the Spaniard the ‘best goalkeeper’ he has ever played with.
De Gea left Old Trafford in the summer of 2023, bringing an end to a 12-season spell with the Red Devils. He spent several months training twice a day with his former United coach, Craig Ellison, before ultimately choosing to accept Fiorentina’s offer amid interest from multiple clubs.
He has since made a strong impact in Serie A, with his crucial saves often proving decisive in earning Raffaele Palladino’s side valuable points, particularly during their eight-game winning streak in late 2024.
In an interview with Livey.Events, as reported by TMW, his teammate Gudmundsson expressed his disbelief at how easily Manchester United parted ways with De Gea.
“It’s absurd that Manchester United decided to let go of someone like him,” Gudmundsson said.
“He’s a great guy, a very humble person with whom I talk about everything. On top of that, he played eleven years in the Premier League, winning numerous titles.
“He’s the best goalkeeper I’ve ever played with in my career, and it’s amazing to share the pitch with him. We’re talking about a top player.”
De Gea made way for Andre Onana at Old Trafford, with the former Inter goalkeeper joining Manchester United in a deal worth over €50 million.
