Fiorentina submit bid for Joshua Zirkzee alternative

Joshua Zirkzee appears to be edging closer to a Manchester United exit as the final days of the summer transfer window approach.

Fiorentina have already submitted a bid for the Dutchman, although United are yet to approve his departure.

The decision could also influence Michael Carrick’s remaining transfer business.

United may consider another attacking option if Zirkzee leaves, while keeping him would provide extra depth behind their established forwards.

Zirkzee arrived from Bologna for £36.5 million in 2024 after earning the Serie A Best Under-23 award.

However, he has struggled to reproduce that form in England.

The 25-year-old has scored only five goals across 56 Premier League appearances for United. Last season brought just two league goals from 24 outings.

Part of the difficulty has been finding his ideal role.

At 6ft 4in, Zirkzee has the frame of a traditional striker, but his game is different.

He likes dropping away from the penalty area, linking play and using his technique in deeper positions.

That makes him capable of operating more like a false nine than an orthodox goalscorer.

Fiorentina are now preparing for the possibility that United refuse to sanction Zirkzee’s move.

According to Sky Sports Italy, the Serie A side have submitted an offer to sign Everton striker Beto as an alternative.

Fiorentina remain interested in Zirkzee and want to sign him on loan with an option to buy.

The forward has reportedly given his approval to the proposed switch.

However, United have not yet given the green light, leaving Fiorentina to explore another route.

Beto has consequently emerged as their Plan B, with a fresh offer now sent to Everton.

The development puts further pressure on United to decide Zirkzee’s future quickly.

Fiorentina are clearly unwilling to wait indefinitely, while Carrick also needs clarity before deciding whether another forward is required.
