Five Most Ruthless Owners in Premier League History

Being a Premier League manager comes with no guarantee of job security – especially if you’re in the employment of one of the five most ruthless owners in Premier League history.

For the purposes of this list, we’ll be listing the five most sack-happy chairmen in Premier League history. We’ll be looking at Chelsea, Crystal Palace and Watford owners in this list – can you guess who they are?

Todd Boehly

Chelsea have been a ‘sacking’ club since the turn of the millenium – when Todd Boehly acquired control of the Blues, this didn’t change.

He sacked his first head coach, Thomas Tuchel, just a couple of months into his Chelsea tenure. Since then, Graham Potter, Frank Lampard, Mauricio Pochettino and Enzo Maresca have fallen by the wayside.

Boehly is an impatient man – he wants instant results from his managers. When you look at the amount of money he has thrown at them, it isn’t hard to see why.

Simon Jordan

Simon Jordan may love to criticise Premier League clubs for making rash managerial decisions on TalkSPORT nowadays – but let’s not forget how trigger-happy he once was at Crystal Palace.

In his first three years at the Palace helm, Jordan hired and subsequently sacked three permanent head coaches, with a further two leaving the club for other reasons during this timeframe.

He became much more lenient with head coaches in the years that passed, though he would become embroiled in a two-year legal battle with Iain Dowie after the latter controversially left the club in 2006.

Roman Abramovich

If you thought Todd Boehly lacked patience, then Roman Abramovich had all the self-restraint of a 5-year-old child after consuming too much sugar as Chelsea chairman.

During Abramovich’s 19-year reign, he oversaw no less than 14 managerial departures. Some of them, such as Roberto de Matteo and Carlo Ancelotti, were sacked under incredibly harsh circumstances.

Nevertheless, Abramovich’s success at Chelsea can’t be denied. During his time at the club, the Blues won five Premier League titles and two Champions League trophies.

Gino Pozzo

Watford have become the poster child for manager sackings in the past few years. Gino Pozzo is the catalyst behind this, having taken over the Hornets back in 2012. He would become the sole owner of the club two years after this.

Since he arrived at the club in 2012, Watford have seen 21 managers depart the club – some of them leaving on more than one occasion, such as Javi Gracia and Quique Sanchez Flores.

This hire-and-fire strategy worked initially, but has now left Watford marooned in the Championship – it’s unsurprising that they have struggled to appoint quality managers with such an aggressive sacking policy.

Evangelos Marinakis

You all knew who was going to top this list. Not since Alexander the Great has Greece produced such a ruthless figure as Evangelos Marinakis.

This season alone, Marinakis has sacked three head coaches at Nottingham Forest – Nuno Espirito Santo, Ange Postecoglou and Sean Dyche have all suffered his wrath.

A volatile individual to say the least, Marinakis is a man who has become used to getting his own way – either provide him with what he wants, or he will show you the door in short order.
