Fleetwood Town officially sign Manchester United defender

Fleetwood Town are approaching the end of the transfer window and, subsequently, the rest of their League Two campaign with the Cod Army aiming for success.

Town, who finished 14th in the English fourth tier last season, currently sit 15th in the league following their first 28 games of the campaign.

Meanwhile, this month has offered the chance for Fleetwood to improve their squad and give themselves a better chance of finishing in a higher position.

During the transfer window, Matt Lawlor’s side have signed Josh Powell on a loan basis from Premier League outfit Nottingham Forest until the end of the season.

Now, the side have made their latest signing as the transfer window approaches its last stages.

Announcing the news on the official Fleetwood Town website, the club have announced that they have signed Rhys Bennett from Manchester United in a permanent two-and-a-half-year deal.

Bennett had been with the Cod Army on a loan basis last season where he made 38 appearances and became a fan favourite before returning to Old Trafford.

Now, he has returned to the Highbury Stadium (to the excitement of fans).

Speaking about the signing to Town’s media team on their official website, Bennett stated: “I’m absolutely buzzing to be back here.

“From the moment I came in last time it just felt like a family. I’m really excited to pick up where I left off and get back playing football.

“I’ve just turned 22 and I think now is the time to kick on and play as many games as I can.

“I’ve been out on loan, I’ve played a lot of football and it’s about getting more experience and growing as a player and as a person.”

Rhys Bennett will wear the number two in his time at Fleetwood and could make his debut against league leaders Bromley next Saturday.
