The UEFA Champions League playoffs got off to a strong start for Monaco's Folarin Balogun. In the first leg of Monaco's tie against PSG, the USMNT forward took advantage of his good form to net a brace that could prove key in this series for the principality club against the reigning champions.
One minute was all the Monaco forward needed to get on the scoresheet with an early goal against PSG, one that began to set the tone for the match, at least in the first half, with Monaco dominating at will against Luis Enrique's team.
Eighteen minutes later, Monaco repeated the formula, finding Balogun, 24, again, their lethal man in the PSG area, who, in less than 20 minutes, found themselves at a disadvantage due to the clinical finishing of the USMNT striker.
Data specialist Mister Chip noted that with his brace against PSG, Balogun became the Concacaf player to score a double in the shortest time, surpassing Mexican Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez, who held this record for Concacaf players in the Champions League.
Hernandez held the mark for his double in 19 minutes in the Champions League in 2015, a record now surpassed by Balogun, who achieved it in 18 minutes against Paris Saint-Germain.
The USMNT forward became the American with the most goals in a single Champions League season, as with his brace against PSG, he reached five goals in one season.
With that, he surpassed Christian Pulisic's record, who, with four goals in a single season, held the mark for most goals scored by an American in the Champions League.
With his brace against PSG, the USMNT forward reached five goals in the current UEFA Champions League season, adding the current champions to his list of victims. The same list that includes Bodo Glimt, Pafos, Galatasaray and now PSG.
In total, across all competitions this season, Balogun already has 10 goals, of which four have been in Ligue 1 against Strasbourg, Angers, Nantes and Lens, plus another in the Coupe de France against Orleans.
