Former Celtic defender Charlie Mulgrew has stated that he is not convinced by Hearts’ title credentials despite their win at Celtic Park on Sunday. Derek McInnes’ side went 1-0 up against the run of play but battled their way to a 2-1 win as Celtic lacked quality in front of goal.
The Tynecastle side have now beaten Celtic twice this season and they will be fancying their chances but the ex-Scotland defender is not buying the hype from the Jambos, especially given the run of form up to their win at Celtic Park.
Speaking to Go Radio, Mulgrew dismissed Hearts’ title credentials, insisting that their style of play will inhibit their ability to get results against some teams.
“I think the Celtic game suited Hearts. They try to play possession-based football against Kilmarnock in midweek, and Kilmarnock had the best chances.
“I think that’s why Hearts won’t stay up there. A lot of the games they play, outside of Celtic and Rangers. The onus will be on them to have possession and go and attack. I don’t think they are a possession-based team. It suits them better to play on the counter-attack.
“It’s only their second win in seven. They struggled against Kilmarnock at home in midweek after having loads of possession – I don’t think they are (serious title contenders). I think there is a reason why they are 6/1 (with some bookmakers). I am not fooled by Sunday’s game.”
Despite the hysterics from Sunday’s defeat, Celtic sit three points behind Hearts but have a game in hand. New Celtic boss Nancy will be hoping that he can get his side into a fine run of form, pulling together the resilience from Martin O’Neill’s interim spell as well as setting up for a team that possesses the Frenchman’s ideals.
