A former Manchester United defender has been charged the Football Association following alleged misconduct during a recent League Two fixture.

According to The Sun, the assistant manager at Salford City is accused of “acting in an improper manner and/or using abusive and/or insulting words an/or behaviour towards a match official” after Salford City’s dramatic 3-2 defeat to Cheltenham Town earlier this month.

The game saw late controversy, including a sending off and penalty decision, before Cheltenham completed a stoppage-time comeback.

The coach in question is Alex Bruce, who spent part of his youth career in the Manchester United academy before being released at the age of 16.

While he never made a senior appearance for the Red Devils, he progressed to carve out a solid professional career across the English Football League, making over 350 senior appearances for clubs including Hull City, Ipswich Town and Huddersfield Town.

Following his retirement from playing in 2022, Bruce moved into coaching and joined Salford’s backroom staff in 2024.

The League Two side are famously backed by members of the “Class of ’92”, including Gary Neville and David Beckham, giving the situation added attention given the club’s Manchester United links.

They’ve also signed former United players and gone into deals with old sponsors of the club.

Alex Bruce is also the son of Steve Bruce, the former Manchester United captain who lifted three Premier League titles, three FA Cups and two League Cups during a decorated spell at Old Trafford.

As previously reported, Alex’s father revealed he had once been considered for the Manchester United managerial role and also opened up on receiving death threats during a turbulent period managing Newcastle United.

Alex Bruce and the Salford City player charged alongside him have until March 2 to respond to the FA’s allegations.
